9 June 2002 -- THE 137TH CONSECUTIVE CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE held by the Ladies Memorial Association, est. 1866

Where -- Historic Blandford Church, in the City of Petersburg Virginia, Crater Road off Interstate 95, 5:00 PM, 9 June 2002.

History -- Blandford Church built in 1734, with it's 14 Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows is dedicated to the 10 former Confederate states, the border states of Maryland and Mississippi, the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, and the final window, the "cross of jewels," being donated by Louis Tiffany symbolizing the reconciliation between the Northern and Southern states is the site of the 9 June 2002 service. Beginning in 1901, each state participated in funding this treasured memorial to our brave heroes. Louisiana's Washington Artillery collected money for the Louisiana window in one day! God bless Louisiana.

The Petersburg Ladies Memorial Association, formed in 1866, since have honored the memory of the Confederate dead, the men, women, and children who lost their lives during the War Between the States.

Among the marked soldiers grave sites, many of your ancestors and state's soldiers lie among the 30,000 unknown Confederate soldiers graves marked by state. Their spirits are alive here and their loyalty, honor, and commitment are honored here each year. Among them you will find the richest, the poorest, the professional and the laborer. Just loyal Americans!

Through the visit and efforts of Mrs. John A. Logan soon after the war, the 9th of June 1864 Battle for Petersburg, this memorial service, and this historic 9 June memorial has a direct inspirational "cause and effect" thread to the recommendation by John A. Logan to the U.S. Congress establishing a National Decoration Day -- Our present National Memorial Day. Documentation for this connection can be found in Mrs. Logan's autobiography and among other noted publications.

Blandford Cemetery is the 2d largest in Virginia
