Bedtime problems @ 21 months

My twenty-one month old daughter refuses to go to bed by herself. She has never had a problem going to bed before. She always slept well and through the night. Now, she will not go to sleep unless my husband or i is on the floor going to sleep beside her crib. We slip out once she is aleep, but if she wakes up in the night we have to go back in there and it takes even longer for her to go down. We have tried 'crying it out' or soothing in 5 mintue incremints. Even a consistent routine which we have had in place since birth doesn't seem to help. We can't take much more os this sleepong on the floor, so any advice is accepted. Please Help!
