scab picking

My 7-yr old won't stop picking at scabs/moles, etc.. on his face and arms. Most are from scuffs w/his younger brother, or from general 7-yr old play, but his teacher wants to have a "conference" about it. How should I respond, and how can I get him to stop?

Re: scab picking

I was a picker (had bad acne), and no matter what anyone told me about scars etc., it never made me stop. The more I got into trouble about it, the more I picked. Know what? It's an anxiety issue. Picking was my "nervous tick". Medications work for adults if it gets that bad, but I wouldn't recommend it for a child. Get the child a counselor (don't let him know it's for "his picking") and see if the counselor can figure out what the underlying issues are, and solve those; the picking should then go away on its own. Good luck!
