Baby Grizzles

My son is nearly 1. He used to be quite happy to play with his toys for 5-10 minutes while i did the washing up or prepared tea. Recently he has started to cry/grizzle every time I leave the room. If I pick him up so he can see what I'm doing he is happy. If left until I have finished the task he just cries and cries getting steadily louder and louder until he is very distressed. Obviously chopping veg etc is very hard with a large baby on your hip and i feel that he should learn that sometimes mummy needs to do things other than sit on the floor and play with him. But how do I get him to understand this without distressing him to the point of coughing and vomitting? I have tried putting him up on the work surface next to me, but he tries to grab everything and it really is not safe for him.
