¡May the traitor to Terra rot in Hell, as is his due for his sins! LEONARD, traitor to Terra, former terrorist, and generally no-*******-good-at-all-to-noone, who’s only redeeming value was he died before he could be tired for his war crimes, his crimes against humanity, AND his crimes against peace.
The simple fact is that Bill Spangler, James Luceno and Tommy Yune have all participated (and in Tommy's case, willfully and arrogantly) in character assassination. What is all the more galling is that Tommy has done so over the objections of not just me! He doesn't give a hoot in hell, which is typical of Tommy's egocentric view on Robotech.
Bill and James, to the best of my knowledge, have never answered satisfactorily (or even why) they view Leonard the way they do. Tommy, as usual, simply doesn't give a **** and will pointedly tell you he doesn't believe in continuity and following it.
The fact that Leonard is vilified to such an extent that its become a caricature is all the more telling. He's been turned into the Goldstein for Robotech's Secondary Continuity and the 2-Minute Hate is well in effect. People call him a coward for not going into space with his troops on the one hand and then call him a heartless ******* for staying at his post when Monument City was being cut to shreds. As Pieter Thomassen once quipped "What did you expect him to do? Go out on the roof and shoot at the spaceships with his sidearm?" The need to blame everything on Leonard, and the knee-jerk reaction of most of his detractors is absurd to say the least.
Being “right” and being “popular’ are not always the same thing. I, however, am no hypocrite, changing sides whenever it suits my purpose. In the real world, people get admonished for what they do, not for what others think of them. Oh, PLEASE tell me you were one of the “GLOVAL War Criminal” crowd. PLEASE. I need a good piece of meat. (After all- I EAT MY ENEMIES.) But it sure was fun to watch him get beat up by that little thing called logic and reason, rather then baseless and pathetic attempts to flame.
He politicked and bikered his way through the war, undercut the defenses of Terra with his gamesmanship, and when the chips got down folded. It was HIS mismanagement that cost Terra the war. BEFORE ANYONE SAYS ANYTHING- His defenders “claim” the ASC was victorious. This is a categorical LIE. That would be like trying to argue that the Iraqi Army won that war, “¿…After all there’s an insurgency isn’t there?” (quote taken from a BUSH-RUMSFELD bashing entry on an anti-semite site- Something about ending the war now).
The goal of the REF was to get the Invid off Terra. The Invid left- of their own volition or as bodies matters not. This is just more DOLL rhetoric, intended to take the subject off-topic, rather than address the REAL subject, their God’s failures as a military leader.
To claim that LEONARD WON the Second ROBOTECH War is as ridiculous as to claim the Iraqi Army won in ’Ø3; After all, the US/UK/Allied forces actually DESTROYED less than 1Ø% of the IA war material (most of this tanks), and killed an even smaller percentage of the IA. Yet, never the less, the IA WAS broken. The Saddam Era Iraqi Army isn’t just “gone”, the vast majority of their leaders are either on trial or in hiding.
Equally, to claim the Terra LOST the First ROBOTECH war is to fly in the face of the evidence- When the fighting STOPPED, the Tśentrædi Forces were the ones that had been broken and was in defeat, and Terrans controlled their planet, battered and bloodied, but still standing.
So, to review:
First ROBOTECH War: Terrans are victorious. Tśentrædi Forces defeated outright.
Second ROBOTECH War: Though a technical draw (if one wishes to so argue), the Terrans were broken and therefore lost; This also set the stage for the outright Invid victory during the invasion.
Third ROBOTECH War: Terrans are victorious after forcing the Invid off-world.
The only war lost, then, is the SECOND War- LEONARD’S War.
