Well, I successfully swapped out the original 12hp Tecumseh in my '67 SS12 for a '62 Briggs & Stratton 6hp. Believe ot or not, it actually seems more powerful with the smaller engine.
I retrofitted an electronic ignic ignition module from a newer blown up 5hp that I just happened to have lying around my basement. It's great, no more breaker points!
I also made an air stack and an exhaust stack similar to that of a farm tractor.
I love it. Simple as hell. Magneto, recoil start, and I'll soon ad an internally-regulated car alternator.
