My grandfather was a senior captain for the United Fruit Company during the 1930's and 40's. until he and his ship were "drafted" for WW II. He was the Captain for the maiden voyage of the "Peten" and, according to family history, was its captain after it was renamed "Jamaica". I am looking for earlier and later information about his employment with the Company.
There was a poem and picture of him in a company magazine where he was referred to as "Hurricane Harry"
My father Norman Slade told stories about Captain Hurricane Harry Spencer. One time they had a big ceremony for throwing an admirals ashes into the sea off the side of The ship. A gust of wind came up and blew the ashes back on deck. After a long awkward silence Captain Spencer came over the load speaker and said. " Mr. Slade sweep that son of a ***** off the deck and lets get on with this'.
