I have a book called Briggate, Yards and Arcades. ISBN 0-905 671 139. I am not sure whether this is still in print. An explanation of Briggate from the book says:
Brycg -Gate:
When Ralph Paynel inherited Leeds around 1200 he found that his family had already given away the main village which stretched the length of Kirkgate, leaving him with very little income. To solve this problem he established a very large "new town" in 1207. This had a huge central market area with thirty plots for houses, shops and gardens extending on both sides to back lanes. This market place later became known as Briggate, bryc being the Old English word for bridge, and gata the Old Norse for a way or street.
