The Postgraduate Diploma in Education is a programme designed to prepare University graduates to teach mainly in secondary schools within Hong Kong. The curriculum extends over one academic year of full-time study, or two academic years of part-time study. Holders of a Postgraduate Diploma in Education may be eligible for an additional salary increment and improved promotional prospects in Hong Kong schools.

FULL-TIME

The full-time programme is primarily intended for students without prior school teaching experience.

The programme runs throughout the academic year from September to June. It emphasizes methods and practices of teaching and the theoretical aspects of the study of education. Students are given the opportunity to gain practical experience of schools in the first semester and to undertake further teaching practice in the second semester. Work in schools is under the guidance of a teacher tutor or mentor.

Students may be required to join evening classes for some courses.

PART-TIME

The part-time programme is primarily designed for students who are serving teachers normally with at least one year relevant teaching experience. This course covers the methods and practices of teaching and the same theoretical aspects of study as the full-time programme. However it does not place the same emphasis on personal guidance as is offered to full time students.

The programme extends over two academic years of part-time study. Classes are held on two evenings per week in Year 1, and one evening per week in Year 2, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. and run through each academic year from September to June.

In principle, agreement has been reached with schools for the release of teachers to enable them to attend the PGDE classes. However, intending candidates should seek prior approval from their principals or employers to ensure that they are willing to release you to attend classes punctually.
