Caernarfon Tunnel

As a student in Bangor, I know very little about the area and have just visited Caeranrfon to see the area before the year starts.
I noticed a tunnel running under the town and it looks like an old railway line. Can you confirm if this is the case?
If so, then why was it closed down and where did it run to?
Any information would be appreciated. It is not for course work, it is just curiosity and we al know what happened to that cat don't we?

Well done on a magnificent website.

xx

Re: Caernarfon Tunnel

You are perfectly correct in saying this was a railway tunnel. The North Wales area was originally served by the London and North Western Railway and the station at Bangor was opened in 1848, the Britannia Bridge in 1850 and Caernarfon Station in 1852. Caernarfon was then the the end of the line up to 1869 when the line to Llanberis was opened and later the line to Afon Wen.

The tunnel goes under part of Bridge Street, Y Maes and comes out just beyond Cofi Roc. At that end a joist can be seen with the maker's name DE WINTON FOUNDRY and the date 1869.
