How do you tell a child that her dad is not her biological father?

She is 4 years old and her dad is the only dad that she has ever known. Her DNA donor chooses not to be involved at all.

It has recently become a reality that she could find out from someone else and we don't want this to happen.

It's a sensitive issue because she's so young. The best thing to do would be not to tell her at this point but, as you mentioned, other people may tell her.
If she were older, she'd understand that a father doesn't have to be biological but at this point it would just confuse her.
I guess what I'd do is work out a way to tell her so she understands - talk on her level with language she gets.
