Re: manila media

Do you know Mike

if SUN-Star is clever then they should go special ways by football and ignoring the media in Manila!

May be you have heard about the new Tournament-Structure in AFC ( = Asia Football Confederation )

Next year 2006 the EMERGING-FOOTBALL-Nations ( = 16 other Nations ) should get their own league with its own budget..
I think the Philippines is one of the TOP-Favourites in this new league ( maybe also Afghanistan )

AND do u know?
Also CNN did show TIGER-CUP-FOOTBALL with Philippine-National-Team in our Europe-TV as summary..

May be the media in Manila is not just UP-TO-DATE which chances are inside football!

I found this info at www.footballasia.com about a new competition for emerging nations in Asia. Maybe if the Philippines wins some games in this new tornament they will go higher in the FIFA ranks.

The new competition will be a marvellous boost for Asia's emerging football nations

KUALA LUMPUR - The Asian Football Confederation has announced plans to launch a new competition - the AFC Challenge Cup - to assist in the development of the game in the continent's 'emerging' football nations.

The competition, which is to begin in 2006, will feature the national teams of 17 countries and will be held on a biannual basis in a single country, with all expenses to be borne by the AFC.

The nations that have been selected to compete in the AFC Challenge Cup - Palestine, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Tajikistan, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Brunei, East Timor, Laos, Philippines, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Macau and Mongolia - have been classified as emerging countries by the AFC, who are hoping that the competition will help to boost the development of football in those territories.

"These 17 countries need time to catch up and close the gap on the more advanced nations in Asia. It is hoped that the AFC Challenge Cup will increase awareness about football in those countries and accelerate the game's development there," said AFC president Mohammad Bin Hammam.

"For these emerging nations, qualifying and doing well in the Asian Cup finals are dreams that are not achievable yet. By playing against teams in the AFC Challenge Cup, they will have a better chance of success and will be able to raise the standards of football and interest in their countries.

"There will be no qualifying and all of the teams will go directly into the competition. Depending on their standards, these teams may be reduced or changed over time, but the AFC Challenge Cup will continue to be there for our emerging nations," added Hammam.

As a further boost to its emerging nations, the AFC are also planning to launch a new competition involving clubs from those countries in 2005.

"The AFC President's Cup featuring clubs from emerging nations will go ahead in 2005," said AFC general secretary, Dato' Peter Velappan.

"The AFC has divided its 45 member associations into three different levels and created club competitions for each level. The top 14 'mature' associations play in the AFC Champions League, the next 14 'developing' associations compete in the AFC Cup and the remaining 17 'emerging' association are to take part in the AFC President's Cup."

The plans for the new competitions were announced in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, following the AFC's first executive committee meeting of 2004.

During its ex-co meeting, the AFC also confirmed the selection of reigning AFC Champions League winners Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates to represent Asia against the winners of this season's UEFA Cup in a new competition - the AFC/UEFA Cup - in December. Al Ain will play a single match against the UEFA Cup winners at an Asian venue to be determined later.

The AFC also ratified recent FIFA rule changes including the abolishing of the 'Golden Goal' in competitions, recommended East Timor for full FIFA membership, and announced the donation of US$100,000 to Iran's Bam earthquake relief fund.

They also endorsed the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to determine the ages of players in its age-group competitions and will use the technology during the AFC U-17 Champions in Japan later this year.
