After a week-long investigation, intensive surveillance, and a chase on foot more than 100 miles away, a man who escaped Hamilton County Community Corrections is back in custody, according to Indiana State Police.

Rafael Rosa III was serving time for burglary and theft-related convictions, when he "walked away from custody" on June 18 during a work release program, according to officials.

He managed to lay low until Friday evening, when a joint search by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and state police led them north, to the Knotty Pine Motel in Fort Wayne. Once found, authorities said the 27-year-old tried to run away on foot, but officers were able to safely detain him after a short chase.

In a statement, ISP Sgt. Brian Walker said they were able to find Rosa after "several hours" of intelligence gathering and the efforts of multiple troopers, both uniformed and plain-clothed.

Rosa is currently in the Allen County jail, where he will remain until he is transferred back to Hamilton County Corrections. He is now facing an additional charge for failing to return to lawful detention, which is a felony.
