Inmates say they are kept in constant darkness at Miami Correctional Facility

More prisoners have come forward alleging their constitutional rights were violated at the Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill when staff confined them to dark prison cells for weeks on end.

On Thursday three inmates filed legal complaints against prison warden William Hyatte and deputy warden George Payne Jr. in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. Earlier this month six other inmates opened similar lawsuits describing conditions in the Miami Correctional Facility's restrictive housing unit as "cruel and unusual punishment" and "a form of torture."

The Indiana Department of Correction declined to comment for this article.

All nine of the inmates are being represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana. "These are unlikely to be the last cases we file," a spokesperson for the legal organization told IndyStar on Thursday.
