Indiana prison guard accused of taking bribes, allowing inmates to have sex with visitors

An Indiana federal corrections officer is facing a host of charges after prosecutors say he allowed inmates at a Terre Haute prison camp to have sex rendezvous in exchange for bribes of cash and prescription medication.

Prosecutors allege that Leon Perry III, 41, of Linton, would arrange to be at a different part of the Federal Correctional Institution as inmates left to meet with women at nearby hotels. Prosecutors also allege that Perry accepted bribes of cash and prescription medications to allow unauthorized visitors on prison grounds to have sex with inmates.

Perry also allowed contraband into the camp, including cellphones, drugs and alcohol, prosecutors say. “Mr. Perry put the safety and welfare of the inmates, correctional officers, the institution and the entire Terre Haute community in jeopardy by allowing this to occur,” U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler said in a statement Tuesday. “He allowed greed and power to betray the confidence we place in prison officials.”

Perry, a patrol officer at the minimum-security prison camp, has worked as a federal corrections officer for about a decade, according to Minkler's office. He was responsible for stopping inmate escapes and preventing unauthorized visitors from entering prison grounds.

He was arrested on charges of conspiracy for an officer to permit escape, conspiracy to bribe public officials, officer permitting escape, public official accepting a bribe and providing contraband in a prison, Minkler’s office said. If convicted, Perry faces up to 15 years in prison.

W. Jay Abbott, special agent in charge of the FBI's Indianapolis division, said in a written statement that these actions by law enforcement officials cannot be tolerated.

"The illegal actions by the few corrupt officers undermine the public's confidence in the majority of law enforcement officers who are trustworthy public servants,” Abbott said.
