Universal Reconciliation a bit confusing for me at the moment
I have only recently started to study Scripture, rather than simply read it. Apart from the mistranslations that I have encountered along the way, I also found out about universal reconciliation. This was something that had never been brought up to me before. It was always literal eternal hellfire for all unbelievers and hardcore sinners. I started viewing some videos on Youtube and a lot of scripture was brought up that supported the idea of universal reconciliation. I am still pondering which is correct...literal eternal hellfire, or reconciliation for all regardless of whether you're a believer or not (eventually). Could someone provide any useful articles that address the issues between the two, and offer me a bit of insight into how you came to accept universal reconciliation? Thanks so much! |

The footnotes in my brother's study Bible started me thinking about it when I was under 10 years old. Later, I knew a Greek Orthodox priest in Perth Amboy N.J. who hinted at the idea occasionally. Blessings to you! I can well understand the internal tug-of-war you have going on inside of you right now, I have the same thing. I grew up fundemental Baptist but I could never reconsile a "Loving God" and the sadistic, brutal "Just God" preached by the modern church. I have done much research into UR and have come to the only sensible solution I could find: One mis-translated word can change the entire gospel message and drive many away from the knowledge of a truly loving, caring Father in heaven. The one word is aion(aionios). You see, I found that there is no way that aion means forever or eternal; it only means for an age or an indefinite period of time. This changes the reality of God to reflect the character of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. He is the good shepherd that leaves the 99 to go find the 1 sheep that has wandered into danger. He is the loving Father that runs to His son to welcome him back home after he has seen the error of his ways and truly repented, this after a time of suffering and learning his lesson and acknowledging to his Father his sin and failure. I came to see that all of the "problems" I had with scripture began to make sense to me when I started to find that for the first 250 years, the Body of Christ taught universal reconsiliation. UR is not heretical doctrine, it is a return to the first teachings in the church as seen in the writings of Paul. Never once did Paul write of "eternal torment" because that would rob the victory from the cross of Christ. "For if I be lifted up from the earth I will draw ALL men unto me." Not some, ALL. 1 Tim. 4:10, "...we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of ALL men, ESPECIALLY of those who believe." ALL men... Especially of those who believe... that means that in due time, even those who do not... yet This makes the Good News even "gooder" doesn't it? |
