God is Good
"The acid test for any theology is this: Is the God presented one that can be loved, heart, soul, mind and strength? If the thoughtful, honest answer is 'Not really', then we need to look elsewhere or deeper" (Dallas Willard, The Divine Conspiracy).

The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee. (Psalm 145:8-10.) |

He is, but we shouldn't be treating Him as though we can go on ahead and do wrong, and that He won't punish us. Some people think that way, but it ain't right. G-d is just and more severe than any creature. |

[Quote]He is, but we shouldn't be treating Him as though we can go on ahead and do wrong, and that He won't punish us. Some people think that way, but it ain't right.[unquote] I agree with you there Maribel [Quote]G-d is just and more severe than any creature.[unquote] I'm not sure I agree with you here, as I'm not sure what you mean. Creatures can be pretty severe with each other (and unlike G-d, they're not always motivated by love.) Also, let's not forget that mercy can be a higher form of justice. That's why the Apostle John was able to say that "if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9.) |

He's much bigger than us puny creatures(Is. 55:8-9 NIV). Remember what He did with Sodom and Gommorah, the Flood in Noah's day and other disasters in the old testament? We shouldn't be reducing Him to our own terms. |

[Quote] He's much bigger than us puny creatures (Is. 55:8-9 NIV). [unquote] Yes He is. [Quote] Remember what He did with Sodom and Gommorah [unquote] Yes, but let's also remember the following: As I live, saith the Lord GOD, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters...When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them: That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them. When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate...Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant. Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant (Ezek. 16:48, 53-55, 60-61.) And you, Caper'na-um, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I tell you that it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you." (Matt. 11:23-24.) [Quote] Remember..the Flood in Noah's day and other disasters in the old testament [unquote] Yes, but let's also remember the word's of Peter: For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water...For this is why the gospel was preached even to the dead, that though judged in the flesh like men, they might live in the spirit like God. (1 Peter 3:18-20; 4:6.) [Quote] We shouldn't be reducing Him to our own terms. [unquote] No we shouldn't. So why do you do reduce Him to your own terms--by saying He's "more severe than any creature"? Perhaps His "severity" has a higher perpose than you can conceive: Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But God does not take away life; instead, he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him (2 Sam. 14:14). |

[Quote]Also, let's not forget that mercy can be a higher form of justice.[Quote] The above quote is by Mike. I was only just reading a little about Nelson Mandela & the Truth & Reconciliation Commission. Mandela, Tutu & all who set up the commission into such political atrocities had an understanding of mercy being a higher form of justice!! Best regards, Steve. |
