A thought on Romans 5:18-19

I notice that sometimes apologists will take the use of "the many" (or "many," depending on the translation) to provide a justification for limiting the force of the preceding verse. While it has been shown that it does not do so, what I hadn't realized before now is that it is actually strong evidence against the "all without distinction" argument.

This argument, of course, goes that Paul is simply saying that all kinds of people are justified by Christ. Leaving out the consideration, for a moment, that nothing in the immediate context suggests such a reading, the phrase "the many," set up as a parallel to "all men," does not allow for any reading similar than the "all without distinction" that has been suggested for verse 18. "The many" here is the same as the "the many" in verse 15, and it is the same as the uses of "all men" in verses 12 and 18.

Just something to think about.
