A crack in the wall (a challenge for Robert)
On another topic heading, Robert highlights what he believes is a crack in the universalist's argument. (See "A tough verse for the universalist viewpoint.") Many people think that if there is but one crack in the edifice the whole thing collapses. I think that some here have already made clear that the verse Robert referred to is not a crack but something which is imagined to be, but let us assume for a moment that it is a crack. In 1 Tim 4:10 we are told "(and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe." What then is the "especially of those who believe" suppose to mean? These words only have significance if God is the saviour of all men. You are only someone's saviour if you save them. God is only the saviour of all men because He will save them. He is especially the saviour of those who believe because they have already begun to be saved. 1 Tim 4:10 highlights a real crack in a different wall. Robert, if you reject a belief for one problem alone what are you to do given 1 Tim 4:10? If you are to be fair you must reject that God will save only some men. But you have already said that you reject that he will save all men. No view is without what seem to be problems. The issue is are they real problems or imaginary ones? Are you willing to believe that maybe eternal death means something other than what you have been led to believe? Have you read the footnote for Isaiah 24:21,22 in the NIV? It is very enlightening. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah%2024:21-22;&version=31; The captives will be set free. I must die two deaths. I must die a physical death and I must die to self for all eternity. The process is painful. I will only be free from the process once I am eternally dead. Robert, apply the same strict rules to your own doctrines that you demand of others. |
