My mare has a bog spavin which she developed for no known reason 2 yrs ago. Although she had a couple of months rest, it didn't seem to bother her too much and she was soon back into normal work (local hacking). 3 weeks ago I took her up onto the hills and, unfortunately, the mud up there was quite sticky and she came back with her hock inflamed again. It is the same place and size as her previous problem and the vet said then to just give her time and rest. This time she is really stiff and uncomfortable and, despite being rested in the field (she cannot be box rested as she is a stressy thoroughbred) and me massaging it twice a day, it does not yet seem to be showing any improvement. We are very much a pair in the stress department and I am really concerned that it may be something more sinister. Has anyone had experience of bog spavins and how long they generally take to heal? I am also really upset to think that I have caused this pain for her as she is my pride, joy and best friend. Any advice would be much appreciated. |
