Repair or replacement of Quick Disc drive

I've been away from synthesizers for a decade or so (although I've kept all my old gear), but I've recently gotten interested again because my girlfriend's nine year old daughter is showing promise on the piano. She has expressed an interest in keyboard synthesizers. So...

I bought a Roland MT-100 sound module/sequencer on eBay for a decent price that I thought she could use with one of my old Roland keyboards (JX-3P). As I suspected, the 2.8" Quick Disk floppy drive no longer works because the belt has turned into jello. This format of floppy drive (made by Mitsumi) was used by many different manufacturers years ago in various types of musical gear.

Does anyone know if there are still replacement belts for these 2.8" units?

Better yet, does anyone know of any info on how to replace these 2.8" drives with the dime-a-dozen 3.5" floppy drives that almost every computer has used in the last fifteen or so years? The outer housing is almost the same size, so it might just be a matter of figuring out the wiring. Any suggestions?

Re: Repair or replacement of Quick Disc drive

Hi, Patrick!

I recommend you to check the MIDI specification of MT-100. If it can send/receive its own data via MIDI System Exclusive, you can store the data into your PC.

I don't know how to repair the QD belt. There are some sites that describes repairing 3.5 FD's belt, and I hope they would be of some help.

I don't expect that 3.5 FD works as replacement for QD. I suppose you would have to rewrite the OS to adapt QD machine to 3.5 FD. For as far as I remember QD does not support random access....

But if anyone has information about QD/3.5 problems, please give us some direction.

Re: Repair or replacement of Quick Disc drive

Sealed, thanks for your response. I'm not sure about the ability of the MT-100 to transmit its own MIDI System Exclusive data. It mentions in the manual that the MT-100 is capable of receiving this data, but it doesn't actually say it will transmit it.

I forget (as I've been away from MIDI for some time), but is MIDI System Exclusive data some kind of a data dump (if I'm using the right terminology)? If the MT-100 is not able to "dump" this info, how about using a utility that could run on a PC to record this data while the MT-100's sequencer is actually playing the tracks? Something like Anvil Studio?

All I'm looking for is some easy way for my girlfriend's nine year old daughter to record and play back her own multi-track MIDI compositions. :)

Re: Repair or replacement of Quick Disc drive

Sorry for being late.... Recording the MIDI sequence into your PC is one way to save the sequences.
Any multitrack sequencers will do, incl. what you mentioned. But I think there will be free software sequencers for PC. Or, other cheap hard/soft sequencers would be alternatives.
