Single Cycle Waveforms
Hi, First of all, I have enjoyed your site for a long time now. It's fascinating to read about your explorations into the hidden corners of synthesizers, both popular and obscure. One thing that interests me about some of the synths from the 80s is their use of single cycle waveforms. Memory was an absolutely precious commodity back then, so one strategy for synthesizing sounds was to take snapshots of instruments and loop just a single cycle of the waveforms to use as a sound source. The list of synths that used this approach is pretty extensive: DW8000, K1, K3, ESQ-1, and on and on. I'm a collector of these waveforms. Everyone's gotta have a hobby. :) So far I have the waveforms from the Kawai K3, Prophet VS, and the Korg DW8000. What I've found is that these waveforms are fun to play with outside of the synths themselves. I wrote an application that allows me to resynthesize them and send them to my Kawai K5. It's really amazing the job the sound engineers did capturing the essence of musical instruments with just a single cycle waveform. A couple of questions. First, you mentioned in your description of the KAWAI PCM/DC XS-1 that it used multisampled single cycle waveforms. Would you know which of these old synths multisampled their single cycle waveforms? Second, would you know of any sources where I could find wave files of the raw waveforms inside these synths? This is kinda escoteric stuff, I know, but I've had good results exploring these waveforms and reusing them with my K5 and my ESI-32 sample, and I would like to take my explorations further. Thanks. |

Hi, Les! Thank you very much for your comments! And I'm sorry for my late reply. The single cycle waveform synths are interesting indeed, and they had their own characteristics though they had very little PCM ROM. Multisample single cycles: I came to think that all single-cycle synths have multi-sampled waveforms. I suspect the only group of synths with single-point single-cycles are Roland D-50/D-10/MT-32 series. Almost all other single cycle synths does not lose quality even played in the lower keys. Exploring single cycle waveforms is very interesting to me, too. I have experimented playing CASIO HT waves in YAMAHA SY85 - it gave very different quality to the original sounds. And your K5 application should be a great tool! I'm a K5 user, too, but haven't explored it deeply. I'd like to mail you again in more details. Would you send an email? Best wishes, Sealed |

Sure! I'd be happy to email you. Hey, in the meantime, you may want to check out the Synth Programming group on Yahoo. It's relatively new, but quite active. I've been using it as a kind of blog for sharing my recent synth explorations. I have a number of files in the Files section with examples of different techniques I've been using lately. Everyone there is very knowledgeable and friendly. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Synth_Programming/ |
