nah!
things must be really bad with panmen in grenada..we cant afford a computer ....or things must be really good ,so we have no issues and therefore nothing to talk about...... steelbands doh geh pay for panorama yet ,and not one word...they pay calypsonians to ensure their participation in world cup,not a cent to steelbands, but when they call you would see all jackass panmen running to play, while talking about love for the artform.... ..there is no functioning steelband association in grenada.steelbands making sacrifice everyday ,usuing their hard to come by money and time to train young people , yet you haer government talking about youth development, and not one cent being channeled to the steelbands......the biggest community and youth groups in grenada are the steelbands,we help guide them, we even send the mto school, paying fees, uniforms, music training and in some cases being the only parents some of the kids know....angel harps have a dynamic youth program, so do commancheros, pan wizards, pan angels and other bands..... instead we wiat for a dumb ass panorama competition to cuss and fight each other,(that nobody except us care about anyway)lets come together to fight for betterment for steelbands, our youths and our communities, cause we really care .... ..i have always said that brenda hood, the minister of culture dont care for culture and is dumb....she has three of the bigger steelbands in her constituency..dimension, harps and panwizards...fix those bands, you will affect hundreds of live directly and hundreds more indirectly.which may transulate into votes eventually...then peck, the steelband coordinator in the ministry,i am still to see what he is doing.... ....so lets stop fighting each other, lets stop maccoing on this board, fix pan now |

Pandog Boy you talk a book there. It's pure disrespect for the people in pan in Grenada, aided and abetted by the so-called "custodians" of the so-called "steelband association". One of whom closely associated with the Ministry of Culture, the other of which is/was closely associated with the "Carnival Committee". None of those so-called custodians making a case for the payment of prize monies. And even going back six years - seems like nobody interested in making sure bands get paid for participation in the Caripan competion of 2001 - even though the so-called "steelband association" holds an executive position on Caripan. Yes, there's no real steelband association, just a gathering of individuals around carnival time. But the bands are to blame. There are capable and responsible people all over the pan movement in Grenada, it's time they come together and form a "real" steelband association that would function right through the year and be genuinely involved in improving the lot for steelbands in Grenada rather than seeking the interest of their own band(s). I hear the government planning all kind of "cultural" activities for the world cup and I wouldnt be surprised that even up to now, they havent even contacted steelbands to be a part of this "cultural" showcase. I guess they will appear in the last minute and expect steelbands to be ready. Steelbands should put their foot down and immediately demand payment for Panorama, make it a public issue, send press releases to the newspapers and radio stations - if calypsonians could get pay then everybody else should get pay. Demand payment by a certain date, or else....... Got to run now - but will return to this thread soon |

last night mon feb 5th 2007 i heard david peck on gbn beyond the headline program with lew smith ....they were talking about the cultural program planned for carenage tue feb 6th ,he peck edwards said that there will be lots of cultural acts , including steelbands...i called a number of band leaders to find out if their bands were invited to play and if they would sine they have not yet received their panorama money.they all indicated that they were not contacted by anyone to perform ...so my take is that dimension will be the only band in attendence.... i also heard minister hood indicated that steelband will be paid by the end of this week, so fellas stay tuned.she said call mr edwards to check.or rather, check peck. i went to grandroy on sunday to a steelband concert.. harps wizards cheros pan angels pan lovers ....it was a treat, i love meh pan, steelbands need to do some more of that ,charge a fee and forget this panorama until we have a government who are serious about steelpan and youth development.i know the bands are trying, but with limited funds, so much they can do |

Good Morning to you all, and how is everything going with the Panmen in Grenada? fine I do hope. Well Nah!! I don't think that you should say that the Panorama Competition is Dum, Be nice about that. And lets think about it, Panmen aren't Jackass, we are Cultural people okay!!But I do see what you are talking about. Yes we do needs to have a good Functioning Steelband Association in Grenada, Some one to stand up for our Panmen, and to see that Panmen get payed for the good things that they do. So I can see why you and the others say the things that was said in the E-mail. Any how I think that we should Provide some kind of Academic, Social, Cultural and Recreational Activities for our young People that like to play the pan, and I also think if we could Provide that, it will give them an Alternative to Street Life, givine them the Opportunities to Channel their Energey and use their free time Wisely. If we already have this estlabish in the pan movement in Grenada, good to go. Any - way I love to reed the Messages. One Love and have a bless day. SSGT Cadet RK USMC |

on feb 6th i listened to sherma well on the carenage tell the crowd that we need to know our history, she said that steelpan and calypso started right here in grenada and was exported to trinidad to be developed....come on pan people is that true...well for calypso, i saw a program on the gayelle with roaring lion ,who stated that calypso came from france in the 1700's ....he also said it was previously called ballard,he even went on to explain the standard structure of the verse and chorus as it relates to number of bars ect... he spoke of the french colonialisation of the caribbean in the 1700's ,the music moved from martinique down to the rest of the caribbean.... i have listened to some very early calypsoes ,and in my opinion there is very little african influence, therefore i am inclined to go along with the roaring lions claims...... as it relate to the steelpan , we were initially told that in the early 1930's on winston spree simon was the first to get four note on a pan,and ellie mannette later developed it to eight notes and he was the first to tune a 55gal drum,i have read norman darway's book on the history and evolution of pan, i have listened to ellie mannette lecture on the evolution of pan and his contribution to an art he so greatly helped shaped....... how is it that sherma can tell everyone on the carenage that pan and calypso started here?....is there any evidence that it is so.....can anyone here help.... oh, i heard that you pan people will finally get your 2006 panorama prize monies sometime today.... dont be fooled and rush to peform at the world cup and panorama 2007 without written contracts indicating when monies will be paid.... |

What I will say, is that de steelband comes out of de belly of the Tamboo Bamboo and out of de Tamboo Bamboo, produce the steelpan. It all happen, it was in 1938 when the "Calvary Tamboo Bamboo Band" was parading in Port of Spain and Victor "Totee" Wilson bamboo burst and in the heat of de ting, he saw a pan at the side of de road where he pick up the pan and start beating this paint pan. It was not like the paint pan we have today. It was a pan that they use to put the mixture to mix and then to produce the paint in it, an' he started to beat this pan and from there the other guys wanted a little beat on it and they started to beat the pan instead of the Bamboo. When the band returned to the yard, which was at the corner of Woodford Street and Tragarete road, the next day which was Ash Wednesday, they started to talk about the carnival and they talk about de mas and the beating of the pan. The pan was one of the main subjects on Ash Wednesday and continue as the days go by. .....copied from pantrinbago.com.....thats norman darway speaking |

panist in trinidad will be playing tonight in their panorama competition for the grand prize of ttd 1,000,000.00 ...yes one million dollars as the first prize.....every panist playing tonight will be paid by the government ttd $400.00-$600.00 dollars.pantrinbago was asking the government to raise the figure this year to 2000.00 per panist, they were unsucessful, but i know they will try again next year.pan is alive and kicking in trinidad..the champion band is sure to have overseas tours resulting from the competition.... bands in grenada play for 40,000.00 ...no one get a tour ,no panist get pay, then you receive the prize money eight month later..what can we as pan people do to change that..how can we make the powers that be to look at pan differently in grenada.. |

I have read that in GND we don not have a Pan Association, that stands for all pan players on the island. if that's true well its bad. We need to have an association that will take care of "our" needs and not only around panorama time.... As the Cricket World Cup is approaching, I assume 'Peck' will be putting together for pan members to performed for the tourist but are they getting paid for it? Some of you may not agree but panmen in Trinidad gets paid for just participating in Panorama, and not just the winners, but in GND what we get is problems.....Six months after the fact panorama finalist are getting paid, that disgusting and an insult to their hard work. Peck will always stand up for his band, 'Dimension' but not for others.... Panmen/women far and wide and even on the island should be pushing for a suitable association to take care of their needs and don't go for greed but for the love of the art form. Our youths should be using their energy and time to learn and improved their abilities instead of wasting it on computer games or just hanging out....I learned because of my dad and my brother but to better enhanced our youth pan music should be an art form that youths should embraced....Think about it in Toronto, one pays to learn the art it's not free and I cannot speak for the other countries. Encourage our youths to learn, and form a productive association COPIED FROM ...WWW.SPICEISLANDERTALKSHOP.COM POSTED BY ..KATOLLI |

I certainly agree with you,,,,i am a panist from the country side(St.Andrew's),and i must inform that the past association were only concerned about the affairs of two bands in St.Georges. I respect "peck" as a musician, more so a great panist, but he is equally responsible for the demise of the Steel pan association, with his selfish attitude. Last year the Min.Of culture has a "pan in the school program", which was geared towards starting school bands. They paid up to $2000.00 per school.from my knowledge 6 schools participated in this program, six schools in St.Georges, they were traind in Dimension pan house,,and by "peck".....so you do the math...No other school or pan house in Grenada were given the oppertunity to be a part of this program. I love panaroma, unfortunately it is killing the pan movement in Grenada ,especially at carnival time.Bands have no time to participate in pre-carnival activities ,because of heavy practicing for panaroma,,,and after panaroma they often time claim that they are to tired to come out on the street..I must congratulate the Angel Harps for their support in all community adn carnival activities.....and nuf love adn respect to 'weevils".....COPIED FROM www.spiceislandertalkshop.com poated by joel.... |

Pandog, It was nice of you to re-print my post TS (katolli), but it seems to me that the steelpan members are not taken seriously for their hard work. Like every-one else they have to eat, and take care of their family thus they should be given the best respect. What is "Peck" or the Min. of Culture doing to assist them? Beside playing pan music in the hotels or on cruise ships, what else is offered to them? Nothing. As pan members we should speak up and not let others ride us. I know it an art form and we love our culture and music but look at the reality, or we getting our value? Please don't wait until panorama, where we will be very busy beating the midnight oils to get the music right but this should be year round. And to the pan managers please make sure you have contracts in writing, and signed before stepping onto that stage. Like everything money is important and it will go along way to improving our players and getting the youth to participate. Think about it.

Date: May 24, 2007 at 15:01:14 From: katolli Subject: Pan Men still waiting for 2006 prize monies Now! Now! kindly tell me something why just before the ending of May/2007, Pan men/women in Grenada, are still waiting for their 2006 prize monies. The steelband association has indicated that the amount outstanding to them is EC$113,000. and is hoping that the Minister of Culture will pay them. As most people know that carnival is in August, that's less than 3 months away, and without money some bands cannot prepare for panorama. Just look at the situation, we are begging to be paid, that's digusting and an insult to all their hard work. Carnival without panorama won't be good and as Pan members we should speak with one voice and not let others take us for a ride and although we love our culture and music we are not getting our value. So to those sitting in the Ministry of Culture, just think how carnival will be without pan music if the monies are not paid now.. |

I think all pan men should just boycott the panorama, if the monies are not paid... This is very shameful for the Ministry of Culture to treat us like this... Just imagine if the same situation was in Trinidad, the result would be different... Shame on the Ministry. |
