Help needed with a new Chin

Hi,

We got our first two male chinchillas from a rescue home about six months ago. They were given to us as an established pair who were believed to be around 4 years old. We have kept these two for the past six months and have no troubles with them at all.

Recently we heard of someone who was looking to re-home their male chin, and rather than see it go to the RSPCA or somewhere, decided that we would take him in and try to introduce him to our two.

Having read a few tips on introducing them we placed the new boys cage close to the existing two but far enough away that they could not bite each other. We have only had him around 5 days now, but already his presence is affecting the other two.

Usually we let our two run freely around our livingroom in the evening, but recently they have started to jump on each other and try to (I guess) bite each other. I am really concerned by this behavious as up until now they have been as good as gold but are now getting aggressive toward each other.

We have taken the decision to move the new ones cage out of the living room and into our bedroom, having not even tried to integrate him up until now.

Could you please advise us what we should be doing?

We are concerned that firstly we will never be able to keep the three together, and secondly that even his presence is beginning to make our existing two fight.

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Thanks,
Liz

Re: Help needed with a new Chin

Hi Archibald, When introducing new chins into an established "family" one thing you really need is perseverance! Five days is far, far to short a period to judge whether they are all going to get along. What I would suggest you read is our "Transitional Introduction" information on our Archive page. With regards to your two boys fighting - what is most likely happening is that with the new arrival they are trying to re-establish dominance - it may appear that they are biting each other but this is pretty unusual. Please read the article on our Archive page, digest same and try and follow same. If I can be, in any way, of any further help, just yell! Take care, Liz CCL

Re: Help needed with a new Chin

Thanks a lot for your help, I have read that article now and realise that we need to give it more time and not be too concerned by the apparent scrapping.

We'll perserveer with it some more

Thanks again!!
Liz

Re: Help needed with a new Chin

hii lost one of my chinchilla's in april and decided to get another friend of my other one but it didn't go too well. my once really laid back chin oli seemed as if he wanted to eat the new one dexter. i had them in separate cages for some while,i covered them both in talc every night so they couldn't smell each other scent and let them run around ,but they still didn't get along!(i tried every thing!) last week i decided to try them both in the same cage! they kept me awake all night with the unusal noises etc but after a few days they seem to be putting up with each other, sometimes even sitting next to each other! all i can suggest is take it slowly.
