Newborn chin

Hey everyone! I really need someone to help me. I bought a pair of chinchillas before Christmas, they are in a 5 ft. tall cage. They had a kit sometime Monday morning. I took yhe male out and put him in a smaller cage because he was stressing the female by wanting to mate. The baby has escaped twice already. I have covered the outside of the cage but it still escaped. I am scared it is going to get hurt. Do I need to put mama and baby in the small cage because the width between the wires are smaller? I don't know anything about kits so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I know very little about chins in general.Feel free to email me jparks@intrstar.net. Thank you!

Re: Newborn chin

Hi Jody! I'm not a chinchilla expert but think you have done the right thing by taking the male away. It sounds as if you should put mum and kitten in the smaller cage. Chinchillas, even adults, can escape through the smallest of spaces! I'm sure you well get some more advice on this forum soon as the experts regularly look in. Also, I'm sure none of them would mind being phoned (contact details on site) Best of luck!

Re: Newborn chin

Hi Jody

Hope its all going well with baby, i've only just joined this forum as was plunged into your sutuation on the 8th of july, i didn't know mummy was pregnant and found babies one morning, one baby died the next day but other baby (Nibbles) is doing fine. nibbles managed to escape on his second night, i had to cardboard up the outside of the cage at 12 at night after finding the baby hidden behind the cage. I went and got some chicken wire the next day, this is realy good as it bends easly & has small hole so no escaping! the wire i got was 1/2 inch holes & this worked fine.

I also found that the baby managed to climb very well but didnt get down so well so had to take the top shelves out the cage as i didnt want him falling.

If you need any advice from some one a few weeks ahead but in a simular situation feel free to email.

Hope it all goes well & you enjoy the fun of a new baby chinchilla :o)
