Advice

Dearest Rodger and anyone who reads this,
Can anyone please help me I,m desperate for advice or information to help my little chin Annie,
its been over a week now of her being ill and I've been getting so sick and upset with worry, she's a 3 year old Wilson white and always been very healthy, but 2 weeks ago I noticed she started to have a little trouble eating her food and some discolouration on her chest which I immediately know is teeth, I got her straight to the vet, they put her under to have a look and found a small spur on one of her teeth which they filed down, but they didn't see why it caused her problems eating, she got no better after ,she was trying to eat but still couldn't so took her back again,.they put her under once again and found her top back teeth were level with the gum but they had not worn on bottom ones,Had to force feed Science recovery which she hated and give her one drop of metacam oral painkiller, even bought Critical care to see if she preferred that but with no joy,
She stopped swallowing food when syringed it in and it all fell out, I was at wits end when we took a chance and held it to her through bars of the cage and she took it,incidentally did try this at the beginning but she didn't want to know.
Some days she takes it some she's not that bothered ,but found now she has the runs and she is drooling lots at times, I took her back to vets today but they haven't a clue what's wrong but said to stop the metacam as that may be upsetting her stomach, she had blood tests when she was under for various things and they couldn't find anything wrong, she's still not able to eat her food and I'm arguing with myself everyday as to let her go or not as I don't know how much pain she is in.I don't understand why her top back teeth have worn to the gum when there is no sign of them wearing on the other teeth,I mean they should grow again shouldn't they? they must be stopping her eating because their sore I guess?I have tried her with soft food such as apple, raison etc which she loves normally but no joy.
My mum had Rodgers number so she called him on my behalf which I thank you for Rodger if your reading this,I tried her with low fat strawberry yogurt and cranberry juice which she wasn't keen on so I made her have as she hadn't eaten for a day and I thought it would be a little nicer than the liquid food, haven't done that since as I know she has to have proper food.I have put a pet heat pad in her cage which she seems to get a little comfort from as she sits on it and if I let her out she jumps on top of the radiator in the kitchen and sits there.
I'm sorry its all so long winded my letter but wanted to give the full story , so if anyone can think of anything to help it would be very greatly appreciated,I want to give her every chance as she is the sweetest chinnie I have ever known who loves tickles just about everywhere and will sit having fusses until my fingers ache through the bars of the cage and I have to stop. Its making me feel terribly ill through worry of losing her and have already lost her partner Arnie over a year ago from having him castrated and him getting an abscess all in his insides which lead to being put to sleep, not for want of trying though with anti biotic but it was to late.

Thankyou to anyone taking the time to read this, hope to hear something as I think it will be selfish of me to leave her any longer than another week if she doesn't improve.

Re: Advice

Hi Naomi, Thanks for your explicit email, I've forwarded it to our Administrator Liz Arnold-Smith, to appear on our 'Forum' which is seen all over the world. Perhaps help will come from someone who has similar experience. Chinchillas are indeed funny little creatures especially with this stress factor. More prevalent with white ones[know not why], sometimes they simply give up, very frustrating to caring owners who give their all.My experience with white chinchillas was not very good, lost three or four, caused by stress bringing on strokes/heart attacks. Sorry for such a despondent reply but we at C.C.L. try to give advice with no hidden agendas. Best wishes. Roger. C.C.L.

Re: Advice

hi naomi
i have a 6 year old chin who went through a similar thing last year and i couldn't get him to get eat so i took him to the vets the same and they put him under and then when it didn't get better they put him under again, but still didn't help. he then started fitting really badly which was really heart breaking. i took him to my local vets which don't deal with chin's but he advised me he believed it was the drugs and the operations which he was struggling from.i changed his food completly and was giving him a mixture of recovery liquid food every 4 hrs and a mixure of what i think was evaporated milk and herbal tea. slowly he got a little better but he still is a little softer as he does the same thing sitting on the radiator and likes to get under the duvet for a dark and warm place.he still has problems with his teeth but the vet now cuts them like a rabit would have them done and slowly files down his back ones every 3- 4 weeks. he doesn't enjoy this but it is the safer way to deal with his problem. if you need any more advise on what i am happy to talk to you.
