weight gain

I have a 5 year old chin which has problems with his teeth. i nearly lost him last year by having his teeth trimmed while under anaesthetic but now found an alternative trimming method. i find he sometimes loses a massive amount of weight! any advise on extra's to help with the weight gain. He has a healthy diet of 2 types of pellets and loads of hay. he used to always be chewing on wood etc but after his really bad stage last year he doesn't even look twice at the stuff.
