We must joing BJA to remain Judo Coaches?? Brilliant idea...NOT

Government regulations are saying that, if we do not join the BJA we will not be able to continue teaching Judo. Only people registered with "The National Governing Body"(BJA) can take the "United Kingdom Coaching Certificate", and only those that pass the exam can teach.
But the BJA teach kids only to fight. They don't teach JUDO. We have 70+ kids in our club who might have to take up a new sport.. called Joodo!
The government wants the same criteria across 31 sports. so look out.
Schools and Leisure centres are being pushed to only employ BJA acredited instructors.
Join the national campaign "Save Independant Judo". We Like NAKMAS.

Hi Mick

Good point. NAKMAS is currently on the case and will provide some update in a future edition of the NAKMAS Review.

Kind regards

Re: We must joing BJA to remain Judo Coaches?? Brilliant idea...NOT

yes its all very confusing, if we join the bja do there coaches course do we then have to have our students graded by a bja examiner?
For me personally i practice the newaza of kosen judo so how would my students grade with them? If they only practice the newaza and the copetition judo favours the standup game?
bja is olympic sport judo it is biasd towards only one half of judo the standup game or tachiwaza.
I have no problem with joining the bja to do thier coaches course as the more education for instructors can only lead to a more successfull club or group. but to have to practice waza and refree rules etc for an arena that you will not be competing just doesnt make sense?
By the way i am in the process of joining nakmas so that i can teach students traditional judo which involves the use of atemiwaza (strikes)also.
my syllabus is totally diffrent from that of the bja.
the bja just caters for the sport ,not that i am against the sporting side because i compete myself but if you are injured you are forgotten would gladly discuss this subject further with anybody else who has a veiw on this

Hi All

Don't panic! Once a rumour goes around, everyone seems to think it is fact.

NAKMAS is currently putting together Coaching programmes to UKCC standards. The current NAKMAS coaching is to NVQ standards.

If you are licensed by NAKMAS to practice and or teach Judo, you are legally allowed to do so.

The NAKMAS Review will always keep NAKMAS members up todate.

Kind regards

Hi Guys,

I thought i would add to this thread as it is important that everyone understands that it is NOT compulsary to join a Sports Council NGB.

To add to Joe's valid point as long as you meet the standards required by Sports Centres etc there should be no reason why you cannot hire their premises.

Some of the C.M.A.A.'s members have had this problem recently, we simply challenged the Council Sports Development Office under thier own Equal Oppertunities Policy. After our members produced Insurance, CRB, First Aid etc they could not argue.

Like NAKMAS we too have developed our own Coaching Programme (2 years ago) which is working very well and has been accepted by every Council our members have approached. So once the NAKMAS Programme is done you wont have anything to worry about, not that you do now - as Joe says this is just a rumour.

Regards to all,
