Hi All Here is my life story. I am 48 and started karate at the tender age of 16 under Tommy Morris in the Kobe Osaka, gained my first dan from Sensi Kimura in 1986. Didn't bother to go for it sooner as I believed then,it is not the belt but the person that makes the grade. Left the Kobe and Joined Baska under Sensi Greg Wallace and then left that to join Nakmas about 96/97. I am at present a 5th Dan and in the years I have been training I have trained with some of the greats in the martial arts world. Some of the names are,SensiKimura,Tanni,Nanbu,Bill Wallace,Gerry Fleming,Pat Mckay and last but not least Vic Charles. Hope to be still training well into my old age. Nakmas is the best association that I have came across in all my years training and they have my upmost support in all that they do. Kepp up the goood work folks. regards Robin Bryce |

Kelvin Boyce
Dec 1st, 2005 - 7:29 PM |
Kelvin Boyce is my name and I'm a shotokan stylist. Not that many people can recognise it from my interpretation or poor stances. I graded a couple of years ago to 3rd Dan under Sensei Den Johnson. I teach a couple of classes a week in The Peterborough area (Stamford). I started training with TASK under John Van Weenen in 1987. Still enjoying it after all these years...... We've been with NAKMAS sometime now - no complaints from me. |

Happy new year everyone, My name's Scott Johnson, I study Karate Do under Sensei Den Johnson, I took my 3rd Dan with Kelvin Boyce a few years ago (now that WAS a hot day!) and have had the pleasure of meeting and training with some great, if unknown, martial artists of our time! I have an interest in studying the history of martial arts, as well as the science behind what we all do. So if anyone wants to chat, or has any recommendations for a good book, I'd love to hear from you. All the best. |

Ken Fairhurst
Oct 3rd, 2007 - 9:55 AM |
HI, I'm Ken Fairhurst. 54 years young and I have been a martial arts student for a little over 40 years. I started in Judo and my Sensei recommended I train in Aikido also. So I trained in both for a few years but did nit go as far as Black Belt. After moving house with my parents the nearest Dojo was a Karate club teaching Wado-ryu, but I left to train with Tony Christian who was teaching Mushindo-ryu at the time. He then taught a mixture of styles until settling with Goju-ryu. I left to train with Albert Raynnard in Sanchin-ryu. That was in 1978 and I have been a student of the system ever since. I was awarded my 6th dan in 2006 by Chiba Sensei and am the Senior Instructor for the Sanchin-ryu Okinawan Karate Organisation. If any one wishes to train with us, regardless of style or association, all are welcome. You can e-mail me at sanchinuk@aol.com |

Hi to all who may read this! It is a bit intimidating looking at all those replies from people who have spent their lives studying martial arts, so here is one from the grass roots. I am 47 years old, and currently training in Tae Kwondo with Jupiter Tae Kwondo in Rotherham. I first got involved a little over 3 years ago when my son started. I found watching his training sessions to be very interesting, and inquired if the club had any vacancies for more mature students. Having been reassured that I would be welcome, I have been training for about 2 and a half years. I manage to attend 1 session a week regularly, and others when work allows. In December, my son Toby will be trying for his Red Tag, and I for my Blue belt. All credit to our instructors, 3rd Dans Mark, Andy and Mark, for making my stiff joints more mobile than they were when I was 18, and not knocking me about to much when we spar. Seriously, I am enjoying it immensly, and hope to be able to one day be a credit to my instructors by achieving at least 1st Dan status. If there are any other 40 something people out there who think that they are to old to start training, think again. I would welcome any correspondance with other mature students who are also in the early belt stages. |
