FLABBY HOFFMAN PRESENTS ICONOCLASTS ANONYMOUS

(Post Your Comments and Read the Comments of Others Below in Flabby's Forum)

The Oxford Dictionary defines an “iconoclast” as someone that attacks cherished beliefs.  If the beliefs are truly worthy and objectively beneficial, then the iconoclast might simply be a nuisance.  However what if the cherished beliefs are destructive?  The iconoclast then assumes the role of visionary.  Many would say today that our society’s cherished beliefs are horribly misguided.  Wars without a reason, education systems woefully ineffective, pollution and global warming run rampant, SUV’s and urban sprawl, materialism, conformity, the culture of comfort, prison populations exploding, lack of health insurance, corporate domination of our socializing and informational devices…on and on it goes.  But as we all know, to publicly go against “the powers that be” can be destructive, dangerous and viewed as anti-social behavior.  People can be made to feel intimidated or even “abnormal” by those belligerent ideologues who seem to always hate those that are different than them and who always seem to have the power.  That’s why Flabby Hoffman has created Iconoclasts Anonymous.

Now we have a place to go to voice our attacks against “the cherished beliefs” and view those of others with viewpoints and mindsets similar to yours.  It is empowering when you vent and find the unconditional empathy of those that support your views.  Perhaps you’ll even find a sponsor to counsel you when things seem bleak…and things these days for the iconoclast can frequently seem very bleak indeed.  So go ahead and post.  Voice your opinions.  Any topic or subject is fine so long as it is legal.  Also, while any legal adult subject matter is open territory, even mature themes, please use as much restraint as possible regarding the worst of the swear words (especially those containing the letter “u”).  It’s better for learning how to express yourself as well as it allows all people to view and share and benefit from your experience and thoughts.  Those not fitting into these guidelines will be banned.

The first step is admitting what you are: so say it with me…My name is Flabby Hoffman (insert your name here), and I am an Iconoclast.

I wrote this letter today to Neil Steinberg, columnist with the Chicago Sun-Times. I don't know if he'll decide to print it, but here it is for the benefit of whoever visits this page. I hope it speaks for itself.

Dear Neil,

Firstly, let me say that I am a long-time reader, and always enjoy your column. If you don't mind, I'd like to address a question you raised today. You asked (to paraphrase) why, if the US can arrange for Saddam Hussein to be sentenced to death days before the election, they couldn't have arranged a transition of power to a domestic government in Iraq before the mess there got as bad as it is.

I think the answer is very simple. In my opinion, if that had happened, then the billions of dollars pouring into the pockets of Halliburton and the other pet companies of the Bush administration would have dried up. And let us not forget that these billions of dollars are generated by such items as the US Military being billed $45 for 6-packs of Coke, while our soldiers don't have proper body armor or armored vehicles, military personnel are being made to do jobs for which they were never trained, and many are on their third and fourth combat rotations.

You state that the transition of power in Iraq ought to have happened two years ago. This is the only area where I disagree with you. The US should never have invaded Iraq at all. The transition of power that needed to happen two years ago was here at home.

In my opinion, which is still Constitutionally protected despite Bush & Co's worst efforts, if this country were truly any sort of democracy, instead of the oligarchy or, as I like to call it "unconstitutional monarchy" it has become, then George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld would be the ones sentenced to hang, for treason and war crimes. I believe that they have led the country into an illegal war against a manufactured opponent, for no reason other than their own personal enrichment, and that close to 3,000 US service-people and a minimum of 100,000 Iraqis so far have paid the ultimate price for their greed.

It is my strong belief that they are villains without a trace of honor, and far beneath contempt. Never in the history of our nation have we had such a foul crew at the helm, and never have the waters we have steered into been so dark. Above all, it sickens me that they befoul the name of God to justify their thuggish disregard of what is lawful and right.

If you decide to print this, please use the largest font you can for my name, so that King George II can read it without his glasses - assuming, that is, that he can read at all.
