new to incon and hoping for advice
I do not know quite where to start sorry if I ramble. I am 40 and a professional who travels about to various work places and by overnight. Being incon is all new and I am looking for advice and assistance in finding what works best. A customer service suggested I look here, for there is no one I know currently that can answer my questions. My goals are to return completely to my active lifestyle. I must admit it is quite a change and difficlt learning to adjust.
I wish to share one of the kindest moments I encountered today. When this started out, January 2007, I was just leaking at times and used a pad in my briefs. In route to a job site I was an hour from home when I had an accident, ******* in the car. The pad was like I had nothing on. I was soaked especially my seat. My client was leaving on a vacation and going home was not the best option. I mangage to find this extremely kind guy, Richard, running a dry cleaners in Willow Grove. I explained to him what had happen and without any questions or strange looks Richard took me back into his shop office. Richard asked me to take off everything that was wet which alos included my shirt and t-shirt. Richard returned with a old pair of sweat pants and sweat shirt for me while he laundered my cloths and even pressed my pants and shirt. The whole time I felt completely at easy we chatted freely about things. Before leaving I ended up purchasing a case of first quality at a local medical supply store. They only sold them in cases and I did not wnat to go into a large retail store and stnd in a check out line. Since this I learned I have some serious wetting accidents before I can make it to a restroom.
the first quality was okay but I have some issues with them. In a meeting where I could not get away I wet and when I sat down it leaked around the legs. I have a couple unopened packages if anyone is interested I will glad send them to you them are large size with tape.
I am trying out dry comfort. Can anyone advice as to which are the best disposables. I use the tape sides because most restrooms are not private and I do not want to take my pants off while changing.
There is issues with disposable some in my head others real. I am considering cloth, for i like the idea of them being more enviromental. I hear the plactic as I move therefore I am restricting my movements around the office. Hopefully I get over this feeling. I catch myself looking in the mirror studying whether the extra padding in my seat is noticable. Is this a normal reaction? I notice the disposable are hot making me sweat under the plastic. Are cloth secure? Does the plastic pants worn with cloth make noise under clothing? It is not easy changing standing up are cloth difficult changing? Never having children I have no idea how to fold a cloth diaper to ensure it stays in place. Can anyone share how that is done and the best why to put it on? I am worried about wet cloth against my skin and that an issue with cloth? With summer coming are cloth cooler? I like walking and running in the morning hours how does one run wearing a diaper? Tradionally I am someone who sleeps through the night, but last weekend I wet the bed. It is uncomfortable wearing a disoposable to bed would the cloth be any better?
Customer service on this site suggested the t-shirt that snaps in the crotch to hold everything in place. Can anyone advice whether these t-shirts help?
Where do most guys find it is best to change when they out? I sometime use my car if I know no one is around. One time when I was changing in a restroom I had just undone the tapes to my diaper getting ready to wash up when suddenly I started peeing luck for me the old diaper was still between my legs. If this had happened a few seconds later I would have peed on my pants. Laying down in a public restroom is not an option. How is the best way to avoid an accident like this?
I thank you for taking the time to read my questions. Any advice is great appreciated. I wish not to learn everything on my own by repeated accidents. Making sure no one at work knows about this is most important. Thank you to those who answered questions on coping. I like your advice on staying active and that the general public does not notice. Take care!

Re: new to incon and hoping for advice
hi steven.i've bn wearing both dsp and cloth diapers,i prefer cloth wth plastic pants,i hv daytime thicknesses and thicker for nightime wearing and plastic pants standard large for day and extended waist for night.changin in public restroom stalls can be done discreetly,i tend to repin diapers and pull up my plastic pants while th toilet is flushing, same wth tape noise wth dsp diapers.i find no one really notices,th fresh diaper and wipes can be carried wth ease under a shirt or wrapped up in a jacket.i drive trk so i hv the convenience of privacy in my trk sleepr cab.my diapers are flannel prefold, recycled flat gauze and altered terry bath towels.i also carry a hospital quality washable under pad wth me and use corn starch insead of baby powder.laundering cloth diapers is part of my routine using detergents and using extra rinse whn possible wth coin macines, and use of distilled vinegar instead of bleach or fabric softener helps wth cleanliness.as for noise get what fits you maybe a little larger and th diapers tend to move wth you.

Re: new to incon and hoping for advice
Steven.
Let me see if I can answer some of your questions. I am no longer working because of my back, 3 surgeries ans one more to go now, but I did wear for a short while when I was still working. I started out with disposables too. I was using Depends, but quickly found out they were not very good at all. So I started to triple diaper, poking holes in the first two so the pee would run into the rest of them as the closest of them filled. When I pee, I go all at once, and very quickly too. I have a neurogenic bladder with overflow incontinence, and I also have a 35 ounce bladder capacity, well documented by the nurses at the hospital. I too have issues with sweating in disposables, I even got rashes from it and that prompted me to look for something better. Cloth. Now, when you wear a cloth diaper, you will have to get some new pants a size larger. There is no way your pants will fit over a cloth diaper if they fit well to start with. I wear a 38 normally, but have to use a 40 now to cover my diapers. I do not regret going to cloth, they feel much more comfortable, and sweating is not an issue any more. You still sweat, but it collects on the outside of the diaper, beside the plastic pants, not by your skin. As for a wet diaper, I have found that I don't have a problem with it, my skin has become used to it or was already tough enough anyway, I'm not sure which. And a cloth diaper will take as much pee as you can throw at it up to it's saturation point. It will absorb very quickly, where as a disposable is made for someone that only leaks small amounts over a longer period of time. They can't absorb fast enough and I always had pee running out of my diaper and into my plastic pants. Yes, I had to resort to plastic pants when using a disposable diaper.
As for those plastic pants, I have never had a problem with any kind of noise, they are pressed between my diaper and my pants, so no chance to make noise really.
As for putting one one, well, I used to think the easiest way was to lay down and pin it on. I did this for a while, and I would recomend you do as well just to figure out where the diaper overlaps and how much, where the best place is to pin it and so on. It's easier to figure it out this way than standing, as it may take you a while to get comfortable with it. Once you have done that, I have found that the best way for me is to do it standing up with it between me and the wall. I use the prefold diapers because you don't have to worry about trying to fold it into the correct size and shape. They already come sewn into thirds as well. The center panel being thicker than the outer ones. I take it and prefold it into itself, outer panels to the center and back to the outside again by half. So each side of the diaper looks like an "S" and facing each other if you were to look at it from the end. Then I take it and place it between my legs, centering it front to back, and lean against the wall then to keep it in place while I pin it on. After I pin it against the wall, I take each corner and pull it outward, so it makes it as wide as it started. Do this on both sides, front and back. Once I've done that with all 4 corners, I take one front corner and tuck it behind me and pull the rear around and over the front. I pin it in place, putting a pin in through both halves, those being front and back, and close the pin. One note about the pins. If you put them in and aim the pointy end down and outward, it will hold a lot more pressure before it will ever come undone. If you don't and you pull on the other side to make sure you have a snug fit, you could just open your first pin up and everything falls apart. Now, once I have pinned both sides, I always pin the leg openings as well. Try walking after you put just one pin in the corners of the diaper and you will see why. It will open up and feel like it is coming off. I pin the leg openings by taking the leading edge on the rear half, and pinning it to the leading edge of the front half, making sure I get it tight, so it won't come open, and it also then acts like the gathers on a disposable diaper to catch anything that might decide to come out sideways. { I mess as well, no control of bladder or bowels.} And when I pin mine, I usually have the rear corner of the diaper almost to the center of the center panel and about two or three inches from the top of the diaper, because it doesnt pull around straight anyway, and if you do it like this, it also contours to your body better, helping to hold it in place.
Now about those snap tee shirts, I don't use any, my pants and the fact that I pin my diapers on tightly make sure I don't need to worry, even when really wet. It will really depend on your personal preference. I wear jeans, and don't worry if anyone notices really, I'm beyond the point of caring about that anymore. If you wear slacks, I don't think there is a diaper in the world that will not show. So it's up to you there.
As for changing in a public restroom, well, I look to find one that's a little more private, but I have gone into very busy ones and changed too. I always take the handycapped stall, I am anyway, so i have enough room to change. You will need something to carry your changes with you, and to put your dirty one in as well. I just use a kids back pack for school. I can get two cloth diapers with the inserts into it, along with my cleaning supplies. Yes, you will need cleaning supplies too. In case you are out somewhere there are none available, be it a restroom or in the woods. Either way. I usually carry a pack of thse big moist wipes, and lots of paper towels to clean with first. Oh, sorry, you don't have that problem. Anyway, at least something to clean yourself up with in case you have no water.
I hsve learned all these tricks by trial and error, I didn't have anyone to show me what to do. I hope you have an easier time of it than I did. And I hope I was able to answer all your questions to your liking. Hopefully, that will answer everything. Good luck to you. I'm really sorry you have to go thru this. It's not anything I would wish on my worst enemy, but it's also not the end of the world. It is manageable with out too much trouble. You just need to know what to do is all.

Re: new to incon and hoping for advice
Oh , Steven, I forgot to tell you too, I use an extra large diaper from here, Night weight too, so I have enough material to absorb my pee all at once. I could have used a day weight, but I would have ended up doubling up anyway because of my volume. That's something to think about too.
Also, I have been using the gauze diapers because they seem to be the best all around, they only get softer the more you use them, they hold more moisture, and they seem to last longer.
Now I think I answered everything. Good luck! If I can answer any other questions for you, send them to:
dlricky123@hotmail.com, and I will be glad to help.
