£300,000 makeover

Desborough Town have revealed plans to give their Waterworks Field home a £300,000 makeover.
The main part of the project will see significant improvements to the changing facilities and spectator areas of the ground.

Work will start in the summer and it is hoped that the main elements of the plan will be completed within 18 months and bring the ground up to Southern League standard.

Because of the timescale involved, the club have not applied for
promotion from the Eagle Bitter UCL this season – even though they are in the Premier Division's top three.

Instead, the club hope to keep the current squad together and mount a more realistic challenge next season when they will have the facilities in place to go up.

"As far as the committee at Desborough is concerned, permission has already been given for a new dressing-room complex," said committee member Paul Linnett.

"The Southern League require us to increase the size of the dressing- rooms to accommodate all players, referees rooms and also female dressing-rooms.

"This will basically increase the size of the club by 33 per cent and greatly improve the standard of the facilities here.

"We will also redevelop the main stand by resurfacing the standing areas and refurbishing the roof

"In terms of spectator seating, what work we have carried out on the grandstand will see us through in the short-term. However, we are going to starting putting more seats in at the ground in the close season.

"The first phase of the work will cost between £200,000 and £300,000 with the second phase being another £50,000-£60,000.

"We have got several people already interested in giving us quotations for the work and maybe providing money through sponsorship.

"The main source of funding will come from the Football Foundation. We have an application for a grant in place and we should hear back from them in May or June.

"We've also applied to the Lord Elkington Trust as well as this is a community club and everyone understands that we are providing something for the people of Desborough as a whole and not just the football team."

Desborough travel to Potton United tonight in the UCL Knockout Cup quarter-final. Ben Armstrong is cup-tied so Anthony Page is added to the squad following the 4-0 weekend win over Sleaford Town.
